Riddle Me This And Riddle Me That

I had a very brutal five days this week, so the only thing I was able to come up with was this moldy oldy e-mail from eight years ago.

After the long, miserable spring we had here in the great Northeast, we finally had a nice sunny, warm day. It happened to coincide with my 12 year old son being home from school on summer vacation. I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride, and he said, "Not really, Dad."

Then I said those magic words: "ice cream". He quickly changed his mind.

As we were riding over to the nearby creamery, he turned to me, and said, "I know that one and six is six. But, is two and five 10?"

"No," I replied, "two and five is twelve."

"Then what's 3 and 3?", he asked.

"Seventeen," I responded.

"Oh yeah," he said. "I think I've got it now."

The question is, what the heck were the Dad and his son talking about?

I will update this post on Monday with the answer to this teeny tiny little riddle. Good luck in coming up with one.

1/16/12: you will find the answer to the riddle in the comments section

  1. omg, I haven't a clue.

But your talk of ice cream makes me sad to know that our local Friendly's closed last week :(

  5. Joanne: Yes it does. I've been to that particular one on a couple of occasions and I think it had quite a tough go of it. Too bad, though, that one had pretty decent service.

Charles: Yes it does. If you thought I was bad, you should have a conversation with my soon-to-be 11 year old. :D

Lynn: Nope, but thanks, and you have good one too. :D

    Bearman: Nope, but good guess.

  7. R: Bummer...perhaps you should pass it on to Mr. R and see if he can answer it.

I hope so to, but with the upcoming holiday, the temper should be a little frayed again.

  8. The answer to the riddle is this:

They were riding on their 21 speed bicycles. A 21 speed bicycle has three sprockets in the front and seven in the back. Seven times three is 21, right? So, one and six is when you mesh the first gear with the sixth gear, that's sixth gear, and then two and five is not ten but in fact it's 12th gear, and three and three is seventeenth gear.

  9. Now I know why all the hipsters ride fixed-gear bikes.

  10. Chris: Yeah. Too much work for them. :D

Go on, give me your best shot. I can take it. If I couldn't, I wouldn't have created this wonderful little blog that you decided to grace with your presence today.

About that comment moderation thingy: While yes, it does say up above I can take it, I only use it to prevent the occasional miscreant from leaving thoughtless and/or clueless comments.

So remember, all of your comments are greatly appreciated and all answers will be given that personal touch that you come to expect and enjoy.
