I Got Spam In My Posts!

Yowza, yowza, yowza!

Success!

I am finally a somebody!

I got a spam comment!

Now, I bet you're saying to yourself, "G, how in the world did you get a spam comment? Don't you moderate your comments, in order to avoid things like that?"

Normally I do. Usually, when I get a nasty comment from someone, it's from a someone who resides on Topix, my previous online home. The people from there who do it, have no life. They think they're being cute by doing it. You know, like a power trip of some kind. But because I know how things operate there, I simply make a post saying thus, "You know, my blog tracks all sort of nifty things. For instance, do you know that.....", then I go on a small tangent about a particular town/area of the United States. That usually shuts them up.

But....I digress.

Here, spam comments don't get by me, simply because I nuke the living daylights out of them.

But the other day, I was in a good mood, so I allowed it to be published. My good friends, this is what a typical spam comment looks like (please look at comment by Packy):

It says absolutely nothing of substance, and it contains a link to some bizarre product. I did get one of these last year, before I started moderating my comments, and the link was to exercise equipment. This one I think is to laptops/word processors, or something to that effect.

Now, I guarantee you that I will never, ever see this person again on my blog. You may see this person or someone like them, on your blog. My advice to you would be to nuke it, and others like it, from your blog. I left it on my blog simply because I wanted to write a post about it. It may disappear, but it won't be of my doing.

The only other one I've nuked was one for trees (obviously, my blog is about trees: growing, maintaining, landscaping, and obviously, that person really did read my blog).

So people, don't fall for the spammer that leaves a vapid comment plus annoying link, trying to lure your valuable readers to their website/commercial blog in order to sell them schtuff.

We return you now to your regularly scheduled programming, already in progress.

  1. Hey Georgie. I had a SPAM comment the other day, too. From a man in Indonesia promoting Islam. He left a "nice blog" comment and then a link to his. I just left it, figuring he would never find it again. I think sometimes people click on the link from the Blogger homepage that displays when a blog has just been updated.

  2. Yay, you're so totally somebody now, Georgie.

I keep getting ones in either Greek or Turkish or something and I delete them, but they always have smiley-faces on them so I feel kind of bad in case somebody is legit. And now I've rejected them. And they feel so sad and may go out and jump off bridges or something. So maybe I better let them through next time!

  3. Lynn: I've had the occasional odd comment from other bloggers located elsewhere. Got one from a blogger located in India, who commented on a short story of mine. I checked his out, but his was review blog of all stories about India.

It's quite possible that someone did do that to mine. Doesn't bother me much.

Jannie: I get spam e-mails like that as well. I usually get about 75-100 spam e-mails a week that I purge.

As for spam comments, like I said, I usually nuke them because I don't tolerate that kind of blatant advertising.

I actually thanked a spammer the first time for commenting and even checked out their blog, but they never returned, as far as I know.

I do believe you can get "spam deliminator" for you blog, so that people can't leave you spam comments.

  4. Spam doesn't bother me as much as when I've written a sensitive post and someone drops by-ignoring everything I've written-and says "great post. Stop by and check out mine!"

  5. That can be annoying. I used to follow a blog whose creator used to rant and rave about commentors like that so badly that he changed his blog from a "follow" to a "no follow".

For the most part, I don't get that much spam. Shoot, I don't even get that kind of stray poster any more, at least since I cut down doing the chat rooms.

Go on, give me your best shot. I can take it. If I couldn't, I wouldn't have created this wonderful little blog that you decided to grace with your presence today.

About that comment moderation thingy: While yes, it does say up above I can take it, I only use it to prevent the occasional miscreant from leaving thoughtless and/or clueless comments.

So remember, all of your comments are greatly appreciated and all answers will be given that personal touch that you come to expect and enjoy.
