When "He's So Gay" Meant "He's So Happy" (1)

A friend of mine had stated in the comment section of this particular post (and I'm summarizing here), that while the story was funny, it would never fly, let alone be published, in today's strangulated environment. And to a certain degree, she's right: so long as the strangulated environment consists of non-influential newspapers, over-indulgent movies, mainstream magazines, the irrelevant academic world and the hysterical left, there would be no way in hell it would be published.

Warning: What you're about to read might be considered overly offensive in some circles. Please keep an open mind as you slog your way through and remember, it's only my informed opinion and no one else's.

If you can, please visit me at my other blog to read the rest of this post.

  1. I don't know why anyone would consider that offensive. You merely laid out what some words used to mean, and what they came to mean later. Oh no, I said "came"! I should censor myself, because that could sound like sex, right? :)

  2. M: This is true. However, after dealing with censorship issues in the chat rooms and dealing with the fact that I work in the public sector, I thought it would be best for me to one, put the warning in on this blog and two, put the rest of the post at my other blog.

And yes, you should wash your mouth out with soap (I hear Irish Spring has a nice rich lather) for saying such a filthy word. :D

  3. Dad and I used to debate whether a word meant what the dictionary said it meant...or what people had come to understand it to mean.

We have never come to agreement on that issue...

  5. Darth: Yes, it did show up.

It's tough having any kind of rational debate about certain words, especially if you work for the guv'ment. The guv'ment seems to be hypersensitive to what people say (or don't say) and I can't tell you how many times I've got taken aside by my suprvisor and had a polite discussion about my choice of words.

I think what helps, at least in my work environment, is that most of the people I work with are over the age of 35 and thus are either untainted by p.c.-ness or have loads of common sense.

    People should just lighten up.

Go on, give me your best shot. I can take it. If I couldn't, I wouldn't have created this wonderful little blog that you decided to grace with your presence today.

About that comment moderation thingy: While yes, it does say up above I can take it, I only use it to prevent the occasional miscreant from leaving thoughtless and/or clueless comments.

So remember, all of your comments are greatly appreciated and all answers will be given that personal touch that you come to expect and enjoy.
