What Do You Take Me For???

The other day I got a phone call from an ex co-worker asking about their 1099, and why they hadn't received it yet.

Normally, this question coming from anyone but this person would've been accepted without question, But since the question came from this particular individual, it raised all kinds of flags.

Why?

Because this person is incredibly smart (runs her own music oriented business) and knows how to play the state system like an expert, so in order to get what they want, they will come off as none-too-bright.

Anyways, I returned their call and briefly explained the situation. After they had gotten the answer that they were expecting, and after some guarded small talk was made, the real reason for the phone call was presented.

I listened for a moment, asked a pertinent question, then said I would have to clear it with my supervisor.

Well, that wasn't the answer they were expecting to hear from me, so a few tense words were exchanged. I reiterated my position that I would have to clear it with my supervisor, a few more tense words were exchanged, before they decided to drop the issue and end the phone call.

I hung up and went about my business.

Now if you think I was upset about this, I wasn't. I was more disappointed than anything else. You see, I'm kind of big on BEING HONEST. IF YOU'RE HONEST WITH ME, I have no problem in being HONEST WITH YOU, nor do I have any problem in doing the occasional favor from time to time.

But, DON'T PLAY ME FOR THE VILLAGE IDIOT. I don't know about you, but I detest being played for an idiot. If you keep LYING to me or being less than forthright, chances are pretty good that I'm not going to continue doing favors for you.

Don't pretend to be my buddy when you really want something, only to treat me like shit afterwards. Remember, it goes both ways, so if you treat me like shit, chances are pretty good that I will nitpick you to death to others.

Bottom line, don't treat others like they're beneath you or treat them with utter contempt. Believe it or not, people can and do see through your charade and discover that the real you is a wickedly shallow piece of human flesh that they'll ultimately have no use for.

  2. Joe: I shall. :D

In all seriousness though, all I ask for in life is for people to treat me the exact same way they want to be treated. Nothing more and nothing less.

  3. Bearman: I'm pretty sure there is a large segment of people out there who think I'm playing with a dozen cards short of a full pinochle deck.

Which is fine by me. Keeps 'em guessing and on their toes.

  4. I'm so with you on this. It is just obnoxious when people try to pull these kinds of stunts, and bullshitting as if I am not going to figure it out REALLY pisses me off!

  5. 1099. I'm so weary of taxes right now. (One of my 1099s from inheritance paid the taxes to the state of Connecticut, rather than Georgia. When I called about it, the man said, "Do you live in CT?" No - as you can see, my address is in GA. "Did you mother live in CT?" No - Georgia. "Must have been a typo then. I'll get our tax team right on fixing that." Ha - this summoned up a vision. :)

Totally off your point - good job putting that person in their place.

  6. M: The sad part is I really do like this persson and their partner, but the both of them like playing games and don't like taking the word "no" as an answer. They've managed to alienate almost everyone at my job. Kind of sad in a way, but life goes on.

Anywho, as you know, I have a hate-hate relationship with other people at work as well, mostly because they've tried to play me for the village idiot one too many tiemes.

Lynn: Having it go to my state is the worst possible outcome. We're drowning in red ink and the guv'nor is now clutching at straws to balance the budget.

If you think about it, it's not too much off the point because we're having tax issues as well with everyone's W-4's and what not, so some people are trying to play me for the idiot in regards to that as well.

And in regards to the other person, I'm sure they'll try again sometime down the road to get something for nothing.

  7. Honesty is a foreign concept to a LOT of people.

  8. Some folks see others as simply there for their use. too many of those kinds of people in the world.

  9. Talon: Honesty is foreign concept and a dirty word when you for the guv'ment, whether its on the federal, state or local level.

Charles: I do payroll for a living, so if I'm your payroll clerk and you treat me wrong, I can say with 100% certainty that I will not be doing any kind of favors for you for the forseeable future.

Basically, what you'll get out of me is the absolute bare minimum that my job requires.

  10. It's always quite satisfying to have a rant isn't it? Nice one, G:)

  11. fairness...not just a fad, but an actual courtesy. Don't expect to see more of it in this country where we celebrate obnoxiousness, irreverance, and look down on courtesy as a vestige of patriarchy.

    Sad but true.

  12. Darth: Courtesy is not necessarily completely lost in this day and age.

If you work for a guv'ment entity like I do, not being courteous is detrimental to one's job prospects and/or job.

I've been a state employee coming up on 17 years this March and let me tell you, I have personally experienced both the good and ugly when it comes to being courteous to my fellow co-workers.

All I ask in this day and age is a little respect and a little courtesy. No more and no less.

Go on, give me your best shot. I can take it. If I couldn't, I wouldn't have created this wonderful little blog that you decided to grace with your presence today.

About that comment moderation thingy: While yes, it does say up above I can take it, I only use it to prevent the occasional miscreant from leaving thoughtless and/or clueless comments.

So remember, all of your comments are greatly appreciated and all answers will be given that personal touch that you come to expect and enjoy.
